Gun industry in Danao

Danao City is well-known for its gun industry. The industry started around 1905-1906.When World War IIUSAFFE. Their main task was to re-chamber the Japanese Arisaka rifles to fit the US .30 caliber round or to keep the original Japanese rifle in good service. The industry went on, still underground. In the 1960s, the term paltik was given to the homemade (and illegal) guns.[citation needed] In the early 1990s the industry was legalized by the government, with the creation of two organizations of local gunsmiths. There is no concrete record to support the story on how Danao got its name. Although in the 1960’s there were circularized copies of a story concerning the early founding of Danao, but the contents and substance were but clear reproduction of an old legendary version which related of a Spanish Captain by the name of Manuel Aniceto del Rosario who, as the story went, was commissioned by the early Spanish authorities in the province of Cebu to establish municipalities starting from what is now Danao City towards the northern part of Cebu as far as what is now presently the municipality of Borbon.
This developed when in compliance with his commission, Capt. Del Rosario went to said places to perform his duties. Riding on a horse on his way to the north after a place called Cotcot, he came upon a few natives who were resting and taking time bathing their carabaos in one of the many lakes in the area. Dismounting from his horse, the Captain took his rest and in a short while struck conversation with the surprised natives. Pointing vertically his forefinger to the ground where they stood, the captain inquired just what was the name of the place, with the impression that the stranger might have asked the name of the small lakes where their carabaos were resting, one of the native instantly replied: "DANAWAN" (a Cebuano dialect for small lake) which, according to the story, on account of the Captain’s defective sense of hearing, only heard and recorded the first syllable DA-NAO. Thus begun the early naming of the place DANAO

Danao is located in the northern part of Cebu facing the Camotes Islands. It lies in the eastern coast between Compostela and Carmen and bounded on the west by the municipalities of Balamban, Asturias and Tuburan. It is 8.20 kilometers from Carmen to the North; 97.0 kilometers from Balamban (via Toledo City); 92.14 kilometers from Asturias (via Lugo); 7.80 kilometers from Compostela to the South; and 33.1 kilometers from Cebu City, reckoned from kilometer 00.0 at the Cebu Provincial Capitol Building.

The city is about 3.43 meters above the main area level. Generally, it has flat to rolling terrain with slopes ranging from 0% to 65%. Most of the flat or nearly level areas are found along the narrow coastal plains running from north to south and estimated to be 36% of the total land area. These narrow areas extend to a width of approximately less than five kms. Inland. These flat areas are now planted with sugarcane to serve as raw materials for the sugar mills located at Dunggo-an. Rolling hills, which ranged in elevation from 250 meters to 500 meters, with slope ranging from 15% to 45% is estimated to be 21% of the total land area. The mountainous portion which rise up to 700 meters, with slope range of 45% to 65% above, is estimated to be 43% of the total land area.

  1. Transport
The means of transportation within the city proper are motorized tricycles and pedicabs.
A few people are engaged in the making of sidecars for bicycle. There is no big transportation industry/company in the city; however, there are few auto repair and bodybuilding shops operating in the area.
The city’s road network consists of 12.1 kilometers of national roads; 12.2 kilometers of municipal roads; and 97.5 kilometers of barangay roads. There are a total of 6 concrete bridges within the city’s boundary.
The city has two seaports.
The intercity transport system is primarily served by tricycles and pedicabs. Public transport coming in and out of Danao City are mostly passenger jeepney’s plying the Danao-Cebu route. Passenger busses also pass by Danao City on the way to the northern towns like Bogo from Cebu City and vice-versa. There are private vehicles registered in the City which are increasing in number. Sea transport is provided by about 50 boats/bancas mostly plying between Danao and Camotes Island.
According to geological surveys (BUMINES), the city has a considerable deposit of minerals. Mineral deposit include coal, dolomite limestone, dolomite, shale and sandstone. Prospects for copper ore have been reported in Barangays Cambubho, Langosig and Sacsac. Coal is mined in the mountain barangays of Dumga, Lawaan, Baliang, Togonon, Cahumayan (Sitio Portland) and Manteja. From the Bureau of mines, Special Projects, series number 20, coal reserve is 2.99 million metric tons. The recoverable coal reserves is still 1.76 million metric tons.
Aside from the industries mentioned earlier, there are other industries that make the city progressive. Among them are the cottage industries such as ceramics, fiber-crafts, shell crafts, woodcrafts and metal crafts. Pot making (ceramics) in the city dates back several hundred years ago. The skills in this industry have been handed down from generation to generation. Barangay Suba is noted for this industry with about 60 households involved. Presently, the company that is generating employment from the city and other neighboring towns is Cebu Mitsumi, Inc., a Japanese-owned company operating in Barangay Sabang that manufactures magnetic heads, micromotors and condensers.

  1. Power
  2. The city is being supplied with electric power by the CEBECO II, that gets its power from The National Power Corporation. As of 1986, there were 3, 568 households or 28% of the total population having electrical connections. The average monthly energy consumption per household in 1986 was 120,338-kilowatt hours. For the entire city, the average monthly energy consumption including the commercial and industrial establishments was 349,011-kilowatt hours.
  3. Water
  4. Danao City has its own waterworks system but is available only to the residents in the Poblacion, Looc and Suba. Only 30% of the households in the Poblacion are served by the system. About 13% have individual faucets, while 17% are using the public faucets. One of the problems plaguing the system is the water pressure. A great number of households, about 40% are getting water from dug wells, springs, or rivers. Others have artesian wells as sources of water. The two major sources of water in the city are the Tuburan Springs and Quisol Springs. The volume of supply is estimated to be 2,254 liters per minute (or 700 gallons per minute). At present, there are 1,221 households having water connections with the annual collections at P490,236.00.
  5. Transportation
Danao City can be reached from Cebu City through the national highways which is asphalted/concreted and widened to conform to the specification of a real highway. This road network reaches all points north and south of the city and is serviced by many transportation companies plying routes, These are barangay roads leading to productive interior barangays.
SANTO TOMAS DE VILLANUEVA PARISH CHURCH IN DANAO CITY

Built in 1755, Santo Tomas de Villanueva stands as one of the oldest church in the Philippines. Sto. Niño and Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral in Cebu, Baclayon Church in Bohol, St. James Parish Church in Dapitan, St. Joseph Parish Church in Camotes are just some of the very long list of old churches found in the country. Santo Tomas de Villanueva is situated in Danao City, one of the populated cities in the province of Cebu.
The church suffered a partial destruction during the World War II as it is one of the hiding places of the folks during those times. Even though there were efforts to repair the Santo Tomas de Villanueva church, the edifice still seems not secured. Because of this predicament, Hon. Ramon M. Durano Sr. who is a builder himself and the possessor of a distinguished record of exemplary performance in his sincere dedication to the public good holding uppermost in his heart and determined in doing his best for the well being of his fellowmen, has came out single handed to support the needed reconstruction project which he initiated in 1981 when Julio R. Cardinal Rosales was Archbishop of Cebu and was finished during the incumbency of the present shepherd of the Archdiocese, his eminence Ricardo J. Cardinal Vidal, while the parish was under the pastoral care of Rt. Rev. Santos Maningo de la Serna, V.G., P.A in 1985. The inaugural blessing of Santo Tomas de Villanueva and Solemn Consecration of the Marble Altar of Sacrifice happened on December 23, 1985. An estimated amount on P8,000,000 was provided out of the generosity of Hon. Ramon M. Durano Sr. in financing the said reconstruction project which took care at the same time to maintain the outward antique appearance of the church.
The renovated façade of Santo Tomas de Villanueva still looks natural but the church interiors have already been modernized to have a much better look and feel during meditation and prayer

The Parish of Santo Tomas de Villanueva is very near the Santo Tomas College and the Rizal Monument. It is located a couple of minutes away from the sea port of Danao and 5 minutes away from the bus/v-hire Terminal and Gaisano Mall. Getting to Santo Tomas de Villanueva from Cebu City is by going first to A.S. Fortuna in Mandaue City, then riding a Sabang-Danao jeepney. Alternatively, one can take the bus or v-hire at the North Bus Terminal (NBT). The fare from Mandaue and NBT going to Danao ranges from P25- P40.
                                KARANSA FESTIVAL IN DANAO

Dubbed Karansa Festival, the celebrations date back to Spanish colonial times when after a days work, pot workers would unwind by way of drinking and community dances. Although no official steps and music have been designated for the street dances, Counsilor Carmen Remedios Durano Meca, Danao City’s Chairperson on the Committee on Tourism, said that on the celebration of the Feast of Sto. Tomas a series of activities a week prior to the event had already been scheduled. The Karansa Festival will be the highlight of the fiesta day itself with street dances and presentations express in the city’s devotion to Sto. Tomas. The festival will be celebrated on September 18, but celebrations will start on September 9 with a torch parade, of which the torches are to represent the cap of Sto. Tomas.

ALL ABOUT ME IN MY HOME LAND

     I am Jeannie Anne Manulat
Danao City is the place where I grow up. It is a peaceful city generally. Crime rate is comparatively very low than in other places in the Philippines ironic to the fact that almost all sorts of guns are manufactured here. If there are drug addicts here, so also in some places in Manila where crime rate is high anywhere and everywhere in the country. Danaoanons are peace loving people, they live a simple life.
